Also, I don't know if you're waiting or not - but messages only come out of the alarm every 10seconds unless there is an actual event going on - this might be what you are running in to?
To verify, you can telnet to port 10000 of the pi to watch the direct stream.
Otherwise, post your source code and I'll be happy to take a look at it.
