How to initially get status of zones?

Sorry if I am just missing this, but when starting up an application based on AD how would you go about populating each zone and its state? Is there a query that can be sent that would spit back the state of each zone? I know you can watch the !EXP messages to see changes but how would you know what state each zone is in when starting out? I have a DSC PC1864.
