It should not have damaged it, no - but if you are having issues connecting to it that is odd. Double and triple check your wiring and that it is detected as a usb-serial device (dmesg) - if not, we're happy to RMA it. If it is set to the default address it should be connectable and you should see alarm panel messages provided it is wired up correctly.

Honestly, a Vista20p is better than a 20se in every way, and you're not locked out by ADT in any way now, so it's probably better in the end here.

Careful with your wiring! It is labelled on the top of the ad2usb where the wires should go.

Ok the ad2usb is blinking about 1 a sec

When I remove and reinsert the USB cable it does re-enumerate

But screen does not stay connected

I also tried minicom and it also disconnected right away.

Time for an RMA?
Would it be worth trying from a different computer?

Wait a sec, I do not have address 18 enabled in my panel, would that cause the port to disconnect?

That would not cause it to disconnect - 1 last thing to try before RMA - make sure your DI and DO lines are not swapped and make sure nothing else is using the com port - are you using our raspbian image? Is ser2sock running and attached to the com port? Also, please try screen as root (sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200)

It is a bit odd that I have to be root to access it... I think... it has been decades since I have use serial on lunix....

I added myself to the dialout group, re-logged in and I still need root to access the port
I changed the permissions of /dev/ttyUSB0 to o+rw and g+rw

What am I missing?

ser2sock is not running and I am running debian (current release)

You need to make sure your user/group has +rwx on the device to not have to be root

If you have your user added to the dialout group, then try logging out and logging in again as that user or rebooting - that should work.

I am running on a debian system

Does the webapp require nginx or will it work with apache2?

Now I am kinda stuck at step 21 of https://github.com/nutechsoftware/alarmdecoder-webapp

I am not sure what to do with the ngix/sites-*

Maybe I can just use the AlarmDecoderApp instead of the webapp

In our release it is configured to run with nginx - it is possible with apache, but not something we have attempted. We give instructions for compiling the recommended version of nginx in the source - or maybe the nginx version in the debian apt repositories is good enough.

To use apache, you would have to configure it to support websockets and proxies and adapt the nginx/alarmdecoder configuration to work with apache.

If you happen to be running this on a raspberry pi we provide a pre-configured image that has this running - otherwise the manual instructions should work if followed.
